My Ersatz Conversion – Mon 2nd Apr 07

Well, in case some of you didn’t get it, yesterday was the 1st of April, so everything I wrote in my last blog can be considered, well, bollocks!

I really wanted to write a genuine-sounding re-conversion story, but as you could probably tell, it came across as a basic piss-take, tongue in cheek – well tongue in somewhere anyway…

Apologies for the innuendo too – for some reason when I see people dedicating their entire lives to a make-believe creature, it conjures up images of them being bent over and sodomised.

“Oh yes Lord! You’re my daddy! You’re everyone’s daddy! Do it more, even though it hurts and I’m getting nothing out of it!”

Just before I go and get drunk, I’d like to say something regarding a comment that a reader left me: namely, the idea that there is one god, and all religions are just a way of finding him. (The reader didn’t actually believe it themselves; they were quoting someone else).

I don’t know many people who think this, but I have came across it in the past. It seems to be put forward by ultra-liberals who want to play nice and not piss anyone off.

Well, it’s nonsense. It’s got to be, because nearly all religions are mutually-exclusive. That is, they say MY God is the Only True God. Obviously the law of non-contradiction tells us that A cannot be A and also ~A at the same time. So affirmation of any one faith is necessarily rejection of all. Different religions not only have different gods with differing personalities and agendas, but they also have different requirements of their slaves (slaves is more accurate than followers).

How can two religions lead to the same god when they are killing each other over matters of faith? It makes no sense. Not only is the constant arguing and violence over different religions a good argument against the “All roads lead to God” capriciousness, it’s actually a very good argument against there being a god at all!

Imagine that you’re an all-powerful all-wise all-knowing being: what would be the worst possible state-of-affairs if you loved mankind and wanted them all united under your loving peaceful religion? Hmmm, take a look around the world! The way the world is now, is exactly the opposite of what it should look like, if a god a) existed, b) cared for humans, c) wanted humans to know It existed, and d) wanted humans to have one “true” religion.

In fact, the world we see around us is exactly what you would expect if a) there is no god, or b) there is a god but it cared not for humans (therefore not the “god” of any major human religion, or c) this being couldn’t care less if humans believed in it or not, or d) “god” doesn’t want humans to have the same religion.

If a theist every tries to feed you rhetoric about there being a deeper meaning behind a Loving God’s apparent carelessness, just stop them in their tracks and use common sense. “Seriously, what would you do if you were god?” Ask them. If this world is the work of a god, it’s the most bumbling stupid short-sighted poor-decision-making war-hungry slave-driving egotistical retarded god that I can think of. Oh hang on – I’ve just described the God of every major religion.

(For a really excellent essay ripping apart the inept lunatic that is the Christian God, I can’t recommend this article highly enough: http://ebonmusings.org/atheism/screwup.html )

Very amusing link. Probably be a good basis for a stand up routine. Saw another one on you-tube recently that was hilarious, I’ll see if I can find the link for you.

Not sure I agree with the conclusion – he may be looking at the problem from the wrong angle. The Godless Heathen Atheist that he is…and to link Hitler with theism through a belt buckle…and ignore Stalin and other no-theist rulers that are responsible for bigger head counts than the odd lunatic making a land grab under the trumped up reason of religion…nah…there are religious nutters, but there are atheist nutters too. They are just nutters that exploit a supposed reason when they have no reason. OK, I wandered off to his other essays, but you get that with these web link thingies dangled in front of you like a juicy apple…

    catch ya later.

    Your comments are in quotes:

    >”Very amusing link. Probably be a good basis for a stand up routine. Saw another one on you-tube recently that was hilarious, I’ll see if I can find the link for you.”

It is very well written and you’re right it is funny. But the humour comes from the inept insane character of the ancient Jewish God, rather than the writer.

    >”Not sure I agree with the conclusion – he may be looking at the problem from the wrong angle. I cannot deny that there can be atheist lunatics as well as theistic lunatics. I cannot deny that atheists have killed just as theists have killed, but here’s the point:

No one has ever killed in the name of atheism. If Stalin was definitely an atheist, that was irrelevant to his campaigns and crimes.

Evil people can do good things and evil people can do evil things. But to quote someone: “it takes religion to make good men do evil things”. Atheism has never been responsbile for suffering, war, and death. Religion has.

The ridiculous irony is that most religions claim to want peace and love. Then why are they frankly useless at achieving it? Why does religion leave a trail of misery and death wherever and whenever it has been?

Ha, yes I know what you mean. Ebon Musings is a brilliant website. Incredibly well written (the author is in his early 20s) and well researched. When I was deconverting, the site was very valuable for me.

    All the best!

As Sam Harris also points out, Stalin may have been an atheist, but his Communist regime was built on dogma and terror, not reason and freedom which most atheists advocate. It was rigid faith in a political ideal, rather than a religion.

No nation or society ever suffered because it was too reasonable, or demanded too much evidence for its beliefs or stressed too much importance on freedom and liberty of the people.
